Life insurance guides

Life insurance guides for the Hispanic community: life insurance with an ITIN, term vs. final expense, who needs it, and how to get a quote over WhatsApp.

About life insurance

Life insurance is the most direct way to protect your loved ones if something happens to you: a benefit your family receives to cover rent, the mortgage, school or funeral costs, without going into debt at the worst possible moment. In these guides we explain, in your language, the difference between term life insurance (coverage for a set period, lower premiums) and final expense insurance (meant to cover burial and small debts), and how to decide how much coverage your family needs based on what you support today. We also explain why timing matters: the younger and healthier you are, the more affordable the premium tends to be, and a policy you open today can stay with you for many years.

Life insurance is regulated at the state level. We rely on non-commercial sources such as the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) and each state Department of Insurance (DOI) —for example Florida OIR or Texas TDI— to explain how policies work, what a beneficiary is, and how a claim is paid. The CFPB does not regulate insurance, so you will not see it cited here as a source. Every figure we give is dated and linked.

These guides are for anyone who supports someone: parents, the household breadwinner, people sending money home. They are also for anyone who has an ITIN instead of a Social Security number and believes that rules out buying life insurance. You can qualify with an ITIN, passport or consular ID, and in each guide we tell you which documents are accepted for each type of policy. We also explain how to estimate how much coverage you need —a common rule is to think about the years of income your family would lose, plus the debts and big expenses that would remain—, how to name your beneficiaries, and why it pays to keep them up to date. And we bust two frequent myths: life insurance is not only for older people, and it does not always require a medical exam; there are final-expense policies approved with simple health questions. Each guide answers one concrete question so you decide with information, not guesses.

Cubierto is a licensed insurance agency: we are not an insurance company and we do not issue the policy. We connect you with the insurers, compare the options for you, and stay with you in your language, from quote to claim. Getting a quote is free: we earn a standard commission from the insurer, at no additional cost to you.
